Driving in Manchester

If you can drive confidently in Manchester, you can drive almost anywhere. The city centre asks a lot of a new driver: Metrolink trams running on the street, bus lanes and bus gates with their own signs and times, one-way streets, and junctions where several lanes split at once. Around the universities, Oxford Road, Fallowfield and Withington are busy with cyclists and pedestrians, and the M60 wraps around the south of the city. We build up to all of it: first lessons start on quieter roads near you, and the city centre comes when you're ready for it.

Your test in Manchester

Manchester has two practical driving test centres: Cheetham Hill in the north of the city and West Didsbury in the south. Both send you out into busy city traffic, so calm, early planning at junctions matters more than anything.

Before your test, your instructor takes you through a mock test on the roads around your test centre, run the way an examiner runs it, so the area and the format both feel familiar. But we never teach a route: DVSA doesn't publish them, and they change. We teach you to drive well anywhere, so whatever road the examiner chooses, you're ready for it. Find a test centre on GOV.UK.
