How much does it cost to learn to drive?

Every cost between you and a full licence, the fixed government fees and the lessons, and how to keep the total down.

Learning to drive is an investment, and it's easier to plan when you know every cost up front. There are two kinds: fixed government fees, which are the same wherever you learn, and lessons, which depend on how many you need.

Government fees

At the time of writing, these are the official fees. They change from time to time, so check GOV.UK for the latest.

WhatCost
Provisional driving licence£34 online (£43 by post)
Theory test£23
Practical driving test£62 on weekdays, £75 evenings, weekends and bank holidays
Full licence after you passFree: your provisional is upgraded

If you need more than one attempt at a test, you pay the fee again each time.

Lessons

Lessons are the biggest part of the cost. How much you spend depends on:

  • How many hours you need. DVSA's figures suggest learners take around 45 hours of lessons, plus around 22 hours of private practice, before passing. Some need fewer, some more. See how many driving lessons you need.
  • Manual or automatic. Automatic lessons can cost a little more per hour, but many learners need fewer of them.
  • Packages. Buying several hours together usually costs less per hour than paying lesson by lesson.

You'll always see the price of a lesson before you book it in the app.

Ways to spend less

  • Pass your theory test early. Revising while you take your first lessons means you're ready to book your practical test as soon as you're ready to drive.
  • Book longer lessons. Two-hour lessons give you more time on the road and less time getting started each time.
  • Practise between lessons. Private practice with a family member or friend helps skills stick. Read about practising with family and friends.
  • Don't rush your test. A failed test means another test fee and often more lessons. Your instructor will tell you when you're ready.
  • Learn in the car you'll drive. If you'll drive an automatic after passing, learning in one can save hours.

Common questions

Do you charge for lessons in advance?

You see the price before you book. Depending on how the school takes payment, you pay when you book, pay a deposit, or pay when your instructor is confirmed. You can also buy a package of hours, which costs less per hour.

What happens to lesson credit I don't use?

Hours you buy stay on your account until you use them. Our cancellations and refunds policy explains what happens if you want a refund.
