What to bring, what to check the night before, and how to stay calm on the day.

Test day is easier when you've planned it. Use this checklist so nothing is left to chance.

What to bring

  • Your provisional driving licence (the photocard). Your test won't go ahead without it.
  • Glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to read a number plate at 20 metres.
  • A car that meets the test rules. Most learners take the test in their instructor's car, which is already set up for it.

Check the latest list of what to take on GOV.UK a few days before, in case anything has changed.

The day before

  • Check your test time and centre in your booking confirmation.
  • Put your licence somewhere you can't forget it.
  • Revise your show me, tell me answers. Our show me, tell me guide has them all.
  • Get a good night's sleep. Avoid alcohol the night before: you can still be over the limit the next morning.

On the morning

  • Eat something. Driving for 40 minutes on an empty stomach makes concentrating harder.
  • Book a lesson just before your test. Many learners have an hour with their instructor before the test to warm up, and arrive in the car together.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that let you feel the pedals.
  • Arrive in good time, but not too early: waiting around adds to nerves.

Handling nerves

Nerves are normal. Examiners expect them.

  • Breathe slowly while you wait.
  • Remember what the examiner wants: safe, normal driving, not perfection. You can make up to 15 minor driving faults and still pass.
  • If you make a mistake, let it go. Don't assume you've failed. Concentrate on the next junction.
  • Ask if you didn't hear an instruction. It's fine to ask the examiner to repeat it.
  • Take your instructor along in the back if it helps. They can't help during the test, but it can be reassuring.

After the test

Whatever the result, the examiner goes through your drive with you. If you pass, congratulations: read what to do after you pass. If not, share your test report with your instructor and book more practice on the things it shows.

Common questions

What happens if I forget my licence?

Your test won't go ahead and you'll lose the fee. Put your licence somewhere you can't miss it the night before.

Can I use my own car?

Yes, if it meets the rules for test cars, including an extra rear-view mirror for the examiner and L plates. Most learners use their instructor's car, which already meets them.
